Principal Scientist

This is a remote position - the preferred location is Wilmington, DE but all other locations will be considered.

The Principal Scientist for patient-centered research serves as a senior scientific leader to HealthCore’s research teams and provides qualitative and quantitative research expertise, as well as clinical and health care business insights in the execution of real-world evidence patient-centered research studies.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as senior scientific leader and provides subject matter expertise on qualitative and quantitative research designs and methodologies for funded patient-centered research studies, developing and supporting the execution of innovative research valued by clients.

  • Leads and supports the scientific study design, methods (e.g., data collection process and sample size estimation), and analysis of patient-centered research studies, including:

      • Qualitative studies (e.g., interviews and focus groups)

      • Quantitative studies (e.g., patient/provider surveys, cross-sectional and longitudinal designs)

      • Hybrid studies (e.g., qualitative plus quantitative, survey augmented with claims)

      • Patient preference studies

      • Direct to patient studies (no site involvement)

      • Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Studies (REMS)

      • Panel studies

      • Guideline studies

      • Value-based studies

  • Leads and supports development of:

      • Study materials (e.g., recruiting materials and informed consent)

      • Qualitative study development, including target population identification, sample selection, conduct of interviews and focus groups (e.g., interview and focus group discussion guides and participant demographic questionnaires), and qualitative analysis

      • Quantitative study development, including research design, target population identification, sample selection and sample size determination, survey development (e.g., determination of survey domains, identification of appropriate patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and their licensing requirements), and regulatory requirement determination

  • Leads and supports the development of client proposals, protocols, statistical analysis plans, reports, presentations, and publications, focusing on the interpretation of results and translation of results back to stakeholders.

  • Leads and supports the identification of identifying alternative available data sources and other research groups or communities as possible research partners.

  • Leads and supports the scientific, methodologic, and clinical development and direction of the research teams and internal Anthem groups, including providing new product and services development and support.

  • Promote the company’s patient-centered research expertise in client meetings.

  • Provides scientific mentorship to members of the research teams.

  • Conducts and supports independent research, publishes research findings, presents at professional scientific meetings, and engages with various external professional societies/organizations/boards.

  • Leads and supports company-wide initiatives, including those with enhancing or enriching our data and research environment.


Minimum Requirements

  • Requires a MS, PhD, or equivalent in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, or related field.
  • 10+ years’ experience in the field of epidemiology, clinical research and/or health services research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with the biopharmaceutical industry, federal regulatory agencies and/or payer organizations preferred.
  • Strong patient-centered research background in qualitative and quantitative research designs that include study methodology and analytical skills, ideally with knowledge of pre-approval and/or post-approval research studies.
  • Prior experience working with healthcare claims data preferred.
  • Record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals preferred.
  • Relevant experience in conducting research using health plan administrative claims databases (pharmacy and medical claims) preferred.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a constantly changing environment.
