Location: This position is eligible for a full-time remote schedule. Preferred location within a commutable distance from an Anthem office; preferred locations are St. Louis, MO; Atlanta, GA; Richmond, VA; Norfolk, VA; Mason, OH; Denver, CO; Indianapolis, IN. Other U.S. locations will be considered.

This Business Information Developer Consultant position will be responsible for developing and executing complex data mining analyses in support of commercial finance and actuarial pricing teams.  The majority of time will be spent programming using program languages (mostly SQL) to write queries and running programs to extract data and synthesize for use in reporting and data analysis.    

Primary duties may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Establishing and maintaining excellent knowledge of data warehouse database design, data definitions, data sources and flows, system capabilities, related programming languages, and data integrity issues (main internal data sources will be EDWard, EDM, EGD and ARMA). 
  • Gathering business requirements from customers (primarily from commercial pricing health actuaries), developing/maintaining queries and extracting data.
  • Creating and publishing ad hoc and recurring standard reports. 
  • Coordinating the activities of a project team and monitoring project schedules and resources for your projects. 
  • Educating and training actuarial and other business partners on proper use of applications developed or maintained by our team.  
  • Serving as a source of direction, training and guidance for less experienced teammates (usually BI Developers).
  • Performing data reconciliations, variance and impact analyses; researching cause and effect of data issues identified; developing solutions to remediate detected problems.
  • Designing test cases and performing user acceptance testing and regression testing as needed; 
  • Collaborating with business partners, data warehouse teams and IT teams to support data quality and keep data stores maintained and relevant in our ever-changing industry.  
  • Developing and maintaining various types of documentation.


Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a BS/BA degree and a minimum of 4 years of related analytical experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to produce clear, transparent and succinct communication and explanations appropriate to a variety of audiences (in both written and verbal formats) of observed results in data, models and reporting. 
  • Experience using query tools to manipulate large data sets and experience using statistical software preferred.  Tools used will primarily be Teradata SQL Assistant and SAS Enterprise Guide (PROC SQL, SAS DATA Step Procedures, etc.).  
  • Basic knowledge of Statistics/Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance/Accounting, Computer Science, Information Management/Data Science, and Business Administration.
  • PC, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook), Spreadsheet (Excel) and relational database skills.
  • Familiarity with SAS MACRO language, SAS Viya, OLAP, Python/R, Hadoop, VBA, RPA, Cloud-based technology (e.g. AWS) and tools (e.g. Snowflake), PeopleSoft/Essbase/General Ledger and BI Tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau).
  • Proficiency at the effective visual communication of data.
  • Health insurance and health care industry knowledge.
